Job Summary:
The instructional aide is responsible for providing assistance to the teacher in achieving educational objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole. The instructional aide assists the teacher in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Skills, Education, and Experience Required:
  • Prior experience working with elementary age children preferred.
  • Must be courteous and able to effectively manage job responsibilities.
  • Must be cooperative, congenial, service oriented, and promote these qualities.
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to be respectful and empathetic toward students. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

  • Job Responsibilities:
  • Executes instructional activities with individual students or small groups of students following teacher direction and demonstration.
  • Communicates with teachers any student areas of improvement, progress, strengths, and small group instruction.
  • Assists with classroom management and help enforce both classroom management plans, and communicate behavioral incidents to the classroom teachers as soon as reasonably possible.
  • Helps assist students in the lunchroom and help with lunch cleanup.
  • Assists teachers with labeling and organizing materials as needed.
  • Tutors and assists children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Discusses assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Follows chain of command for conflict resolution (e.g. If conflict arises, speak directly to the teacher that you are in conflict with. If conflict continues, speak directly to the principal to find a resolution.) All parent communication is conducted by the classroom teachers. Any concerns brought by the instructional aide will be communicated through the classroom teachers only.
  • Serves as a source of information and helps to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Performance will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal and Classroom Teacher in accordance with provisions of Board policy.
  • Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected in the classroom teachers.
