Forest Lake Academy (FLA) is one of the largest Adventist high schools in the North American Division and is located in Apopka, Florida, just eight miles north of Orlando. The school offers grades 9-12 to over 420 students and is on the same property as Forest Lake Education Center, a pre-k-8th grade school with nearly 700 students. Numerous AdventHealth Hospitals and the Adventist Health System headquarters as well as all of the attractions in Orlando, including the Disney and Universal theme parks and the beach, are only a short distance away from FLA. Job Summary:
FLA has an immediate opening for a full-time counselor. The counselor position requires an individual who is a collaborative team player possessing strong organizational skills with attention to detail. The ideal candidate will be passionate about young people and must be committed to fostering student academic success, college readiness, and spiritual development. Applicants should be familiar with working with data to measure student growth and guide decision making. Specific responsibilities include testing coordinator (PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, ACT, MAP, SAT10), career counseling and college advising, tutoring coordinator, student mental health support and coordinator for conference initiatives, supervision duties and/or sponsorship responsibilities as required of all staff members, and other duties as may be assigned by administration. Applicants for this position must model Christ-like behavior and attitudes which will positively impact students in leading them to Christ.

Skills, Education, and Experience Required:
Applicant must be a tithe-paying Seventh-day Adventist church member in good standing and have the legal right to work in the United States, providing evidence if employed. Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in the field (master's degree preferred) and North American Division (Denominational) Teacher Certification is preferred. Three years of successful experience are preferred. Must have a service-oriented attitude, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work with students and families of diverse backgrounds. Possessing competent technology skills using current educational software and hardware is essential. Additional strengths should include time management skills, organization, attention to detail, self-directed, and motivated. Absolute confidentiality is required. Most importantly, the applicant must possess a love for God, a love for working with children, and a desire to see each child in Heaven.

Job Responsibilities:
The counselor will be expected to:
  1. Promote the Seventh-day Adventist philosophy, ensuring that all subject matter is approached from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective based on guidelines and requirements of the North American Division, Southern Union Conference, and Florida Conference
  2. Establish and maintain a Christian atmosphere in all interactions with students
  3. Coordinate the School Testing (PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, ACT, MAP, SAT10)
  4. Do career counseling and college advising
  5. Coordinate the College Fair
  6. Process College Applications on the Common App
  7. Conduct Florida Shines Career Counseling/ O*Net Career Test
  8. Assist students with scholarship and grant opportunities and the FAFSA
  9. Track Community Service Hours for seniors
  10. Enter data for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship
  11. Coordinate the Career Fair
  12. Facilitate the peer tutoring program
  13. Coordinate the appointment schedule for students to meet weekly with Conference Mental Health Counselor
  14. Assist with the resolution of Light Speed student safety filtering alerts for students
  15. Serve as the Mental Health Coordinator for Florida Conference meetings
  16. Utilize effective behavior management techniques which promote self-discipline
  17. Maintain accurate and organized student records
  18. Communicate with students regularly
  19. Communicate with parents and conduct parent/teacher conferences when necessary
  20. Be willing to grow professionally
